Warriors

This beautiful scupture, by Bruno Giorgi, called "The Warriors" but most comonly refered to as "Os Candangos" (word also used as a reference to those who are from Brasília) represents more than 80 thousand workers who came to build the city. It has been concluded in 1959, and restored in 1987.

Metropolitan Cathedral: Stained Glass

Have I mentioned that the Cathedral is my favourite building here? Well, it is. Not because of the religious side of it, but because of the building itself.

It is unique; different from any building I’ve seen. A church with this wide-open space, without columns, and so bright inside is not usual. I could feel some of the same atmosphere inside the Lotus Temple, in Delhi.

When I started this blog years ago I was really disappointed. The Cathedral was literally abandoned, its stained glass all broken down, as you can notice inthis post.

Fortunately our Cathedral is under restoration since 2009, and the stained glass, created by Marianne Peretti in 1990, had been renewed, using special techniques, high technology and alpinists (!).

Luckily enough, I can see the Cathedral from my office window everyday and it seems that the restoration process is nearly at the end.

Kindness at the Metro

Recently a sort of art is just appearing inside our subway trains.

It seems to me they are made of stickers and so far I could not find any reference or news about them. Are they part of an official initiative to embelish our trips? Maybe a civil initiative? Anyway, I quite like some of them, like this one, picturing Profeta Gentileza.

Still Beings in town

Antony Gormley's Still Being exibition is in town, and his still beings are spreaded around the city.

This one is standing in a very hectic place, just beside the metropolitan bus station, and is raising a lot of intriguing reactions from the public.

A Bird at the Theatre

It looks like flying, it seems light.

In fact it weighs more than 800kg and sits there, waiting for those who are going to the Theatre.

Meteor

A sculpture, made of a single four-tone block of Carrara marble, embelishes the water garden in front of the Itamaraty Palace, the head Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since 1967. It represents all five continents, and was conceived by Bruno Giorgi (1905-1993).

Tiles

Photo: Roberta Sá

Brasília is full of beautiful tiles. They come as a surprise, in places you do not expect. Not old ones, like you can see around Lisbon, but modern ones, designed by Athos Bulcão (July 2, 1918 – July 31, 2008).

He was public artist, interior designer, muralist, furniture and graphic designer, from Rio de Janeiro, invited to Brasilia to collaborate with Oscar Niemeyer.

These tiles pictured are all over the wall of a small church (Nossa Senhora de Fátima, 307/308 South), called by locals as “Igrejinha”, since 1957.

Restart

Due to various reasons, this photoblog has been neglected for quite some time.

Let's start again?
